Participant Observations 29/1/19 - Swans Membership and Thing's I'm Really Looking Forward to in AFL this year

Today I purchased a 5-game Sydney Swans "Country" membership that caters for non-Sydney based supporters. Basically it allows me to go to 5 games of my choice during the year. It looks like the Masters fixture will allow me to go to about 7 or 8 games, so I should be able to use all of the games up.

I'm pretty excited about it, to be honest. I had a Melbourne-based Swans membership for one year when I lived there, but there were only 3 games I think. This membership has a good deal of flexibility, in terms of selecting games, being affordable, seat upgrades, and guest passes.

So fucking pumped.

-----------------------

So the AFLW season kicks off this Saturday, marking what I consider to be the start of the expanded AFL season. So here are the top things I'm looking forward to this season:

- Now that I'm fully invested in a team, I'm looking forward to getting to know more players on the list.

- I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Swans play in-person. AFL coverage on the TV doesn't always fully show the way the team is defending and attacking, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they move the ball, respond to the opposition, in-game changes, and so on

- I'm looking forward to really leaning into the game day experience, in terms of taking friends, sitting in different parts of the ground, getting to know people around me in my section, post-game functions, and stuff like that. The membership I have has a lot of flexibility in that sense.

- I'm looking forward to catching up mates before, during, and after games to forensically examine the teams' performance. I have a mate who lives in Sydney and is a member, so going to games will also allow me to have some really good, deep conversations about the Swans.

- I'm looking forward to the two new teams in the AFLW. I know this might drain the quality of talent, but it feels like the competition is maturing, so those players that have been around for 3 years, will hopefully make up for any stretching of talent.

- I'm really really really looking forward to AFLX. It's been taking so much shit on social media, but I really like the game, and am looking forward to the new "all-star" teams. I didn't mind the old format, where every team had a side, but this should still be pretty awesome. it's fast-food footy!

- I'm looking forward to maybe going to another game interstate this year. Me and Joe had originally talked about the ANZAC day games, but I might be a bit tight on cash then. The other option is later in the year, but it will likely be a trip to Melbourne this year.

- I'm looking forward to seeing old players in new team colours. I don't like the fact that Tom Lynch went to Richmond, but it's always fun to see players in different colours at the start of the season. I don't like the fact we lost Dan Hannebury to St Kilda, but I hope he can resurrect his career there.

- I'm looking forward to seeing which poor performing teams from last year can turn their fortunes around this year, so I'll be keeping an eye especially on Brisbane, Carlton, and the Gold Coast.

- I'm looking forward to AFL360, probably one of my favourite TV shows all year.

- I'm Swans all the way, but I've got a soft spot for GWS. I'd like to try and get to at least one of their games this year. despite their venue being a shit fight to try and get to, it's actually a really good venue from a spectator experience point of view.

- I'm looking forward to all the games in weird venues, like Ballarat, Darwin, Alice Springs, Cairns etc. It's awesome seeing the game played at the elite level in some of these venues.

- I'm looking forward to watching games on TV with mates. This applies especially to Swans games, but there's nothing like pizza, beers, and snack salad and a big game of footy on the box.

- I'm looking forward to the Thursday-Friday night build up to each round. It's my favourite time of the week - just before the first game of the round, when there's so much potential ahead.

I think that's it for now AFLW only 4 days away!!
